Comprehensive Psychological Assessments
Career Assessments
Career assessments help learners gain a better understanding of their strengths, interests, and potential career paths.
In my practice, I make use of a comprehensive cognitive assessment rather than only an aptitude test. A cognitive assessment provides a deeper understanding of how a learner thinks, reasons, solves problems, and processes information.
This allows for more accurate and meaningful career guidance because it identifies the learner’s underlying learning and thinking strengths, rather than only measuring specific task-based abilities.
This approach helps learners make more informed decisions about subject choices, study paths, and future careers.
Concession Assessment (IEB and CAPS)
Concession assessments are conducted to determine whether a learner may qualify for academic accommodations in examinations or classroom settings under the IEB or CAPS system.
These accommodations may include additional time, a reader, a scribe, or other forms of support that help learners demonstrate their knowledge more fairly.
The assessment process involves evaluating the learner’s cognitive abilities, academic functioning, and any barriers that may impact their performance in examinations.
School Readiness Assessments
School readiness assessments help determine whether a child is developmentally prepared to start formal schooling.
These assessments look at a range of skills needed for school success, including early learning skills, language development, attention, problem-solving, and basic motor skills.
The results help parents understand their child’s strengths and areas where additional support may be helpful before starting school.
Subject Choice Assessments (Grade 9)
Subject choice assessments are designed to support learners when they need to choose subjects for Grade 10 and beyond.
Selecting the right subjects is an important step, as these choices can influence future study and career opportunities. The assessment explores the learner’s cognitive strengths, interests, and learning style to help identify subjects that are best aligned with their abilities and future goals.
The aim is to provide learners and parents with clear guidance so that subject choices are made with confidence and a better understanding of the learner’s potential.
Comprehensive Psycho-Educational Assessments
A psycho-educational assessment provides a detailed understanding of a learner's cognitive functioning, academic abilities and possible barriers to learning.
These assessments are often recommended when a child is experiencing ongoing difficulties at school, such as struggles with reading, writing, mathematics, concentration or overall academic progress.
The assessment process helps identify a learner's strengths as well as areas where support may be needed.
The results can guide appropriate interventions and recommendations and may involve referrals to professionals such as remedial therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists or educational psychologists where necessary.
Research Consulting
As a part-time lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pretoria, my research consulting work involves supporting and strengthening academic projects across various stages.
This includes advising on appropriate research designs, guiding decisions around sample size and methodology, conducting independent research where needed, and contributing to the development and refinement of academic outputs.
My role is focused on ensuring methodological rigour, clarity, and alignment with current research standards within the field of psychology.
How the Assessment Process Works
The assessment process begins with an in-person consultation on the day of the assessment. All assessments take place in the mornings and can be scheduled on a Saturday as well. This includes a 30-minute intake session with the parents, where we discuss your concerns, your child’s developmental and educational background, and the reasons for the assessment. In the case of subject choice and career guidance assessments, the learner is also invited to be part of the intake discussion so that their interests, goals, and questions can be included from the start.
Following the intake, your child will complete the relevant assessment based on the concerns discussed when booking the appointment and during the intake session. The assessment is conducted in a supportive and structured environment to help your child feel comfortable while completing the tasks.
After the assessment, the results are carefully analysed and a comprehensive report is compiled within 2–3 weeks. Once the report is ready, a feedback session is scheduled, which can take place online or in person. During this session, the findings and recommendations are discussed in detail, and parents are given the opportunity to ask questions and gain a clear understanding of the results.
